About Jon Sherman

Jon founded Practical Golf in 2015, a website dedicated to helping golfers of all levels enjoy the game more and lower their handicaps. All of his coaching is given from a player's perspective, providing a unique angle often underserved in the golf industry. In 2022, he combined his philosophy into the best-selling book, The Four Foundations of Golf. Jon maintains a +2 handicap, regularly competes in tournaments, and is the reigning club champion at St. George's Golf & CC in Setauket, NY.

My Story

I caught the golf bug when I was 12 years old and fell in love with the game as I watched Tiger win his first Masters. After a mildly promising junior golf career, I fell into an unfortunate relationship with golf in my twenties. My skill level and expectations were completely misaligned. Whenever I played, I put so much pressure on myself to perform. I forgot that golf was meant to be fun. Looking back, I learned a lot from my mistakes and wanted to do everything I could to prevent others from having the same dysfunctional relationship with golf.

A Rebirth

When I turned 30, I could finally play and practice more. I started to unwind from many of the mistakes I made as a junior and uncovered methods that got me to a scratch handicap and competing again in tournaments. In 2014, I looked around at the game-improvement advice available to golfers online and felt there was a massive void. Everything was either about the swing or very watered-down mental advice. So I decided to start a website called Practical Golf and try to coach golfers from a player's perspective and focus on topics that I felt were being ignored.

At first, the articles weren't very good. Not many paid attention. But I kept writing, listening to feedback, and doing my best to research more and learn from other coaches. Additionally, I worked tirelessly on my own game to learn as much as possible to help others.

Eventually, I started finding my voice and expertise in four specific topics - expectation management, strategy, practice, and the mental game. For years, I wrote hundreds of articles and kept finding ways to refine my communication style and philosophy. I found that many golfers weren't too far off from the proper habits but had difficulty being convinced to change their behaviors. We know we should eat more fruits and vegetables, but sometimes reaching for that bag of chips is easier. And that is ultimately where a good coach comes in - they find a way to explain a concept that gets buy-in from the student.

But I knew a website is not the best place to coach someone. They can bounce around to different articles, and YouTube swing tips are just a click away. In 2019, I felt I had enough expertise and content to write a book. My views on the game would be far more powerful and effective in one organized medium.

I thought I could finish it in a year, but it was harder than I could ever imagine. Organizing my philosophy into a digestible format that was easy to understand was the hardest thing I've ever done (other than being a parent). I quit writing a few times, and my unfinished table of contents sat on my office floor for almost 18 months.

Eventually, I hunkered down and released The Four Foundations of Golf in June 2022. The book was over 90,000 words and 420 pages. I aimed to give golfers of all levels as much tangible, actionable information as possible. If someone purchased my product, I wanted them to feel like they received more value than they paid for. Luckily, most of the golf world agreed. The book immediately took off, selling tens of thousands of copies, and immediately became the #1 golf book on Amazon. As five-star reviews poured in and emails thanking me for the book flooded my inbox, I felt incredibly fulfilled hearing that the book was giving golfers real help.

Since then, I have gotten a lot of requests from golfers for the material from the Four Foundations in another format. Additionally, many have asked to be coached directly by me. I thought I could kill two birds with one stone by creating a video course. Please think of The Four Foundations Masterclass as an opportunity to learn from me directly in a conversational, visual structure. You will learn concepts from the book for the first time or have them reinforced in less time than it would take to read the book. Also, I have added new examples and material from other coaches that are not in the book. I am confident you will be poised to make meaningful changes in your golf game if you only take a fraction of what you learn and apply it!
